Belarus

After reading this article, do you think that creating a democracy in countries such as Iraq and Libya would prove successful? Will these "democracies" still be run by dictators?

I believe that democracy will always have a positive effect on countries. Even if there is a corrupt leader, there will always be room for UN intervention. We've seen more good done in democracy than in any dictatorship.
This being said, this article becomes more disturbing the more I think about it. Why hasn't the UN intervened at this point? It almost seems as though labelling the government as democratic has put Belarus off of the corruption radar. It's sad to think that the UN needs to keep their eyes on countries who have had power-thirsty and corrupt leaders elected.
At least a democracy is a start. If moving from dictatorship to democracy could lead to a true democratic government, it is better than having a straight dictatorship. It is better to have a dictator in a democracy than a dictator in a dictatorship. At least in a democracy there is hope.

  1. Democracy will only have a positive affect in theory, since it's also incredibly easy for corruption to emerge, in my opinion. It often is beneficial in countries, and although I believe countries such as Iraq and Libya should become democratic, I don't think it would bring any immediate change. I think the power needs to be put into different hands before a democracy is developed. I can't think of any other solution.

I thought it was interesting that you brought up the UN and their lack of action, I wonder why that is?

  2. I think that it is clear that democracy is a much better option than having a dictatorship, however I don't think that we should be able to go into other countries and impose our way of life on them. Since most countries that are run by dictators haven't had democracy I don't know if they would be ready for such an immediate change. I think that the country would have to be slowely introduced to democracy.

  3. Without a doubt, I think that democracy is far more superior than having a dictatorship. On the other hand, I disagree with the fact that we should be able to enter immigrate in and out of diverse nations to inflict the way we live our lives on them. Typically, most countries who are administered by a dictator, have not had a democracy or democratic system. I do not think that they would be fully prepared for such an instant adjustment. It would be better if the country would gradually be commenced into a democracy.
